What three years on the island have taught me…

I can now certify that getting operated in a British hospital isn't that bad and contrary to the common belief and stereotypical prejudices the food isn't either. My consumption of tea (black tea with milk and sugar that is) has risen to new heights and I've experienced the problems of loosing...
Newspaper Review on Exposure Radio

Newspaper Review on Exposure Radio

I’ve reviewed the papers live on air for Exposure Radio. I was given the papers half an hour ago and strongly advised not to talk about any serious topics. Given this brief and only the Metro as well as the Western Mail, this is what I made of it. Also...
Cardiff: A Winter Dream

Cardiff: A Winter Dream

When I woke up yesterday morning, all I could see was white. The BBC was absolutely right with its weather forecast, giving out a red warning for snow for the South Wales Valleys. And although the snowfall has been announced quite early and all authorities said they were prepared, life...

Opinion: The Olympics we’ll never forget

When the Olympic Games 2012 are starting tonight with the opening ceremony in London, we will probably see another fascinating opening to an event that’s always caused a lot of trouble. Invented in ancient Greece around 800 BC, it is still one of the biggest events a nation can host....

The missing tea room

The missing tea room

There’s nothing more British than the traditional afternoon tea with scones, clotted cream and strawberry jam. Yet, there were not many places in Cardiff where you could order some cream tea – until now.

No card – no entry: Atrium gets swipe access system

It’s new, very expensive but hopefully very effective too. The University of Glamorgan’s Atrium campus is getting a swipe access system to increase the safety of their students, staff and kit. New security measures were needed after the numbers of thefts and break-ins at the Atrium rose from year to year.

Sonntag mal anders

Sonntagmorgen. Die Sonne scheint in mein Zimmer. Meine Mitbewohner schlafen noch und nur selten fährt ein Auto durch unsere Straße. Während mein Laptop hochfährt, bereite ich in der Küche schnell mein Frühstück zu. Doch dann passiert’s: Nichts. Absolut Nichts. Mein Laptop streikt.

The end of print or the future of journalism?

The end of print or the future of journalism?

I grew up with it, reading one every morning at my breakfast table and then talked about it on my way to school: a newspaper. Black ink on paper. It was part of my daily routine but now that has changed.

PHOENIX Comment: Being German

Proud to be British. Four words you can find printed on a poster outside Lidl or hear when you walk through the city center. But how do you feel about it? Does it give you a feeling of strength? Does it make you walk more upright? Does it make you smile? Does it make you...
